Two weeks ago we announced that the B&N Recommends Program would now include paperbacks and we kicked off our selections with Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls and Traveling With Pomegranates by Sue Monk Kidd, two incredibly poignant and soon-to-be classics of American letters.The announcement reminded me that I really needed to re-read Walls’ The Glass Castle, a memoir of her extremely unorthodox childhood. An upbringing that she felt, “once the truth about me was out I would lose all my friends and my job”. Well that thankfully didn’t happen and Walls’ memories of her poverty-stricken – both financial and emotional – youth, endeared readers to her and reminded us all of the indomitable will and wherewithal of children.
If you haven’t yet read The Glass Castle or, like me, you are planning on re-reading it; you’re in for one of those rare reading experiences where you literally shake your head at the wonder of the human spirit.
