Hard to believe I’ve been reading Bryson since 1995. That’s honestly one of the longest relationships I’ve had, but Bill – as his bestselling author status attests to – is worth every second of it.Like A Short History of Nearly Everything, his latest treatise, At Home: A Short History of the Private Life, is a prime, witty, and wonderful example of Bryson’s insatiable curiosity and — as readers — we get to experience Bill’s excitement firsthand as he delves into the back stories of his bedroom, bathroom, and stairs (for real!).
How could I ever leave a writer that makes the history of hygiene not only fascinating, but funny as all get out – “Throughout the medieval period, an almost sure-fire way to earn lasting honour was to take a vow not to wash. Many people walked from England to the Holy Land, but when a monk named Godric did it without getting wet even once he became, all but inevitably, St Godric.”
