Ishmael Beah’s 2007 memoir A Long Way Gone gave us a first-hand sense of what it meant to be a child soldier in war-torn Sierra Leone. In his first novel, he captures with arresting details the struggles of a pair of friends who attempt to return to their hometown, reduced to a bone-yard by the merciless civil war. Benjamin and Bockarie’s plans to resume their jobs as teachers receive some helpful support, but the villagers find themselves weakened by continuing spasms of murder, rape, and robbery.
